Ruth Vilaça Correia Leite Cardoso (born September 19, 1930 in Araraquara , São Paulo , † June 24, 2008 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian anthropologist and former First Lady of Brazil .

Life

In 1953 she married Fernando Henrique Cardoso , who later became President of Brazil . She has three children with him.

She worked as a lecturer and researcher at the University of São Paulo and at various other universities in different countries.

She was an associate member of the Center for Latin American Studies at Cambridge University , Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales , University of Chile ( Santiago ), Maison des Sciences de l'Homme ( Paris ), University of California ( Berkeley , California ) and at the Columbia University ( New York City ).

She died on June 24th, 2008 of heart problems. She was posthumously awarded the Bertha Lutz Diploma in 2009.
