Euphemia Leslie, 8th Countess of Ross

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Euphemia Leslie, 8th Countess of Ross (also Eupheme , also Lesley , * before 1400, † after 1424), was a Scottish noblewoman .

Life

She was the daughter and heiress of Alexander Leslie, 7th Earl of Ross from his marriage to Isabel Stewart, daughter of Robert Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany and Margaret Graham, Countess of Menteith . She was still a toddler when she inherited his father's title of 8th Countess of Ross when her father died on May 8, 1402 .

Few details are known about her life. From poor health and possibly also physically deformed (she was described as "crouch backed" ), she was placed in the care of her grandfather Robert Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany , who was also designated her guardian with a document dated July 11, 1405 .

In 1411, her aunt Mary (also Margaret), who was married to Donald MacDonald, Lord of the Isles , tried to take on this inheritance prematurely as the last other legitimate heir to the Earl of Ross . With the defeat of her husband's troops on July 24, 1411 in the Battle of Harlaw against an army led by Alexander Stewart, 12th Earl of Mar , Mary had to consider this attempt a failure.

In 1415 Euphemia was to be married to Thomas Dunbar, 3rd Earl of Moray . A papal dispensation was necessary for this due to the close family ties. The letter of Benedict XIII. , with which the usual commission was to be established, was issued at Avignon on June 3, 1415; but already on June 12th Euphemia refused this marriage and for an unknown reason waived all claims from title and property in favor of her grandfather Robert Stewart. With a certificate dated June 15, he in turn appointed Euphemia as the first heiress for title and property, then his second son John , then his third son Robert. After that, said inheritance would revert to the Crown.

After June 15, 1415, no further traces of Euphemia can be found. She is said to have entered a monastery and become a nun.
