Euphorbia aeruginosa is a species of plant from the genus Spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of the spurge family(Euphorbiaceae).
description
The succulent Euphorbia aeruginosa is a maximum 15 cm high dwarf shrub with an underground main shoot that merges into a thickened root . It has numerous branches in the basal area, but there are also individual branches towards the tip. The upright twigs measure 5–9 mm in diameter and are slightly square in cross section. Their surface is light to blue-green and indistinctly segmented. The branches may occasionally be twisted spirally or laterally concave. The copper-colored thorn shields are 5 to 7 mm long and 3 mm wide. The hazel-brown thorns are paired but not fused. Rudimentary, short-lived leaves sit 20 mm above the thorns .
The sessile yellow cyathia are found in groups of three at the branch ends. They measure about 3 millimeters and contain a nectarium .
The fruits are about 3 millimeters in diameter capsule fruits with blunt lobes. The seeds are warty.
Euphorbia aeruginosa comes in different sizes and shapes. There are also transitional forms to the closely related species Euphorbia schnizii and Euphorbia louwii known.
Distribution and systematics
Euphorbia aeruginosa is in the province of Transvaal of South Africa endemic . There it grows in crevices and on deep, sandy soils.
The species was first described in 1935 by herald Georg Wilhelm Johannes Schweickerdt .
