features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 40 to 45 millimeters. The front and rear wings show similar drawing elements on the upper side. Thin black-brown transverse lines stand out from the yellow-brown basic color. A band formed from red-orange to yellow-orange spots can be seen in the submarginal region . A large and a small orange spot stand out below the front edge . Females are drawn a little less contrast. The undersides of the wings show a similar pattern as the upper sides, are cream-colored, yellowish and orange in color and show blackish drawing elements on the underside of the forewing.

Egg, caterpillar and pupa

The egg is yellow in color and is deposited in groups on the leaves of the food plant.

Adult caterpillars are black in color and have many very small gray-white dots on their backs and wide, interrupted white side lines. They are equipped with strongly branched black thorns along their entire length. The head is glossy black.

The doll is whitish and has many small black and orange spots.

Similar species

The black markings on the underside of the forewing of the scabiosa pied butterfly ( Euphydryas aurinia ) are less pronounced than that of Euphydryas desfontainii .

Distribution and occurrence

The species is distributed locally in Morocco , Algeria , the Iberian Peninsula and the French East Pyrenees . It prefers to colonize hot, dry, grassy and bushy areas, as well as rocky gorges, dried-up stream beds and abandoned cultivated land.

Way of life

The moths fly in one generation from late April to late June. Young caterpillars live gregariously in nests spun from silk threads. They hibernate individually sake grow and feed on a variety of plants, such as carding - ( Dipsacus ), Marsh - ( Scabiosa ), dandruff head - ( Cephalaria ) and scabious TYPES ( Knautia ), especially from the Field Scabious ( Knautia arvensis ) . Common devil bite ( Succisa pratensis ) is also accepted for breeding .
