Eurode is a special purpose association and the first symbolic European city that was formed from the German Herzogenrath ( Dutch ’s-Hertogenrade ) and the Dutch Kerkrade ( German  Kirchrath ). Herzogenrath is part of the Aachen city region , Kerkrade is part of the South Limburg association Parkstad Limburg ; both cities are in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine .

Since the 12th century , the two cities formed a unit, but were separated by the Congress of Vienna . The same dialect , the same culture and many family relationships still form a bracket for Eurodes.

The name is made up of Europe and Rode or Roda , the name of both the Herzogenrath Castle Rode (first mentioned in 1104) and the Land van Rode region for centuries . There is also a hero figure, the Schütz von Rode , the local carnival greeting “Roda Alaaf!” And the football club Roda JC Kerkrade .

It is noteworthy that one street, namely Neustraße or Nieuwstraat, is on one side on Dutch territory and on the other on German territory. The traffic signs are Dutch because they were cheaper than German at the time, while the bus shelters are also German on the Dutch side because line 34 , which runs here, is operated by ASEAG . At the end of this street, the Eurode Business Center , located on and on both sides of the German-Dutch state border , was opened in 2001 , in which a bilateral police station is also set up. Similar can be found in Dinxperlo .
