ECRC ( E uropean C omputer-Industry R esearch C enter ) was a German telecommunications company based in Munich and one of the first Internet providers in Germany. The ECRC operated its own Germany-wide network (backbone) , via which mainly companies, research institutes and access providers were connected to the Internet. The company played a key role in setting up Internet structures in Germany.
history
The ECRC was founded in 1984 as a research institute by Siemens , ICL and Bull . The ECRC Network Services GmbH later emerged from this institute and was bought by Cable & Wireless on January 4, 1999 . The company was initially incorporated into the group as a subsidiary, Cable & Wireless ECRC GmbH , and was completely absorbed by the Cable & Wireless Group in 2004 (date unknown).
All components and services of the ECRC have been taken over and expanded by Cable & Wireless.
Legacies
In 1994 the ECRC set up and operated the INXS , the first Internet node (IXP - Internet Exchange Point) in Germany, before DE-CIX , which is now operated by ECIX . ECRC also operated the cns1.cw.net name server known in Germany . Its easy-to-remember IP address 141.1.1.1 is still widely used today as the standard destination for testing Internet connectivity. This server still exists today and is still operated by Cable & Wireless.
