ESU - The European Students' Union (ESU) is the umbrella organization of the European student bodies with 45 member associations from 38 countries and through them represents more than 11 million students at European level. The main goal of ESU is to protect the educational, social, economic and cultural interests of the students and to represent them in relation to European and international institutions such as the Council of Europe , the European Union or UNESCO .

In addition to representing interests, ESU offers an information and networking platform for its members and regularly organizes seminars and workshops as training for student representatives.

history

The organization was originally founded on October 17, 1982 in Stockholm under the name “Western European Student Information Bureau” (WESIB) by student bodies from Norway, Great Britain, Sweden, Iceland, France and Austria. The aim was initially the exchange of information among the members and to ensure the flow of information from European and other international institutions to the members.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , WESIB opened up to members from Eastern Europe and in February 1990 renamed itself to the “European Student Information Bureau” ( ESIB ).

However, with the increasing importance of the European level in terms of educational policy, the member organizations decided in 1993 to use ESIB not only as an information platform, but as an umbrella organization and political interest group. The well-known abbreviation ESIB was retained, but with the addition "The national unions of students".

In May 2007, further consequences were drawn from the changed tasks and the significance, and the organization was given its current name with "ESU - The European Students' Union".

In memory of the Czech medical student Jan Opletal (1915–1939), the ESU awards the Jan Opletal Prize .

Members

The ESU currently has 45 associations from 38 countries, including the Austrian Students' Union (ÖH), the Free Association of Student Unions (FCS ) and the Association of Swiss Student Unions (VSS-UNES-USU). The prerequisite for full membership is that the national associations are generally open to all students in the respective country and work according to democratic principles (see web links ).

At the 52nd general meeting of the fzs in Würzburg in 2015, it was decided to leave the ESU, unless it enacts “effective and coherent measures to respect and protect human rights in the future”. The background was an ESU board meeting (see general assembly) in Baku, Azerbaijan.

In addition, ESU has several associated members, including professionally oriented associations such as that of European pharmacy and dentistry students , but also religious associations such as the European Union of Jewish Students (EUJS).
