Europium (III) hydroxide is an inorganic chemical compound of europium from the group of hydroxides .
Extraction and presentation
Europium (III) hydroxide can be obtained by reacting europium with water . It is also produced by the decomposition of the unstable europium (II) hydroxide hydrate.
Europium (III) hydroxide can also be obtained by reacting europium (III) nitrate with hexamethylenetetramine at 95 ° C or ammonium hydroxide.
properties
Europium (III) hydroxide is a white solid that is practically insoluble in water. It has a hexagonal crystal structure with the space group P 6 3 / m (space group no. 176) . At temperatures between 225 and 300 ° C the compound decomposes to europium oxide hydroxide EuOOH, which decomposes to europium (III) oxide at temperatures above 425 ° C.
use
Europium (III) hydroxide is used as a phosphor activator for color cathode ray tubes and liquid crystal displays.
