Eusebius Schmidt (born November 26, 1810 in Woldenberg , Neumark [today: Dobiegniew , Poland ]; † June 26, 1883 in Landsberg an der Warthe [today: Gorzów Wielkopolski , Poland]) was a German educator .

Life

Eusebius Schmidt was the father of the Basel Reformed theologian Professor Paul Wilhelm Schmidt and the Berlin high school professor Johannes Eusebius Samuel Schmidt (1841-1925) and the grandfather of the sculptor Professor Erich Schmidt-Kestner and the writer Hans Schmidt-Kestner .

Due to the indebtedness of his father, the alcoholic Woldenberg preacher of the same name, the children were separated.Eusebius came to the orphanage of the Neuzelle Abbey at the age of ten , but was able to attend the teachers' seminar attached to it, married Auguste Meyer, who was also from Woldenberg, and left in 1840 to Berlin and because of his good reports soon afterwards he was employed by the French Consistory , the board of directors of the Huguenot community in Berlin, as the first teacher of the French Cathedral School , a six-class boys 'and girls' school. Their classrooms, as well as the official apartment provided to the family three years later, were in the French Cathedral on Gendarmenmarkt . Eusebius Schmidt became head of the girls' school, which was housed in the part of the French Cathedral facing Jägerstrasse, wrote several educational writings that are still highly regarded today, befriended the Berlin city school councilor Heinrich Walter Bertram (46th honorary citizen of Berlin) and advised him on the Reform of the education system, especially the Realschule.
