Euxoa cursoria , also known as changeable dune owl or brown- pollinated earth owl , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

features

The wingspan of the moth is 31 to 40 millimeters. The color of the forewings varies in different shades of brown, from yellow-brown to sand-colored to dark brown. Ring and kidney defects are light brown with a whitish border, clearly highlighted and show a discoidal cell filled with dark brown in the middle . The border area is usually lightened, the transverse lines are toothed. In the case of darker specimens, the drawing is sometimes less pronounced and slightly blurred. The hind wings are white-gray to gray-brown in color.

The reddish egg is small, almost spherical and only slightly flattened on the underside. The surface is finely ribbed and has a net-like pattern. The caterpillars are gray-brown to greenish in color. They have two fine back lines, light side stripes and dark point warts. The head and pronotum are yellow-brown and shiny. The light red doll has a shiny surface.

Similar species

The lighter forms of Euxoa cursoria can hardly be confused, whereas the darker individuals resemble some other species, for example Euxoa ochrogaster ssp. rossica , Euxoa nigricans , Spaelotis ravida and others. In all of these, however, the flaws are usually less clearly framed.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species occurs in northern Europe, including the British Isles, mainly in coastal areas . It can also be found in northwestern Russia , Siberia , Afghanistan , Mongolia and Tibet . Including wirima Hardwick, 1965 as a subspecies , Euxoa cursoria has a Holarctic distribution. It prefers sandy grasslands and beach areas.

Way of life

Euxoa cursoria makes one generation per year. The nocturnal moths fly between early July and mid-September. They come to artificial light sources and also visit the bait . The caterpillars mainly feed on the roots and lower leaves of various herbaceous plants and grasses . They overwinter and pupate in June of the following year. The species occasionally occurs as a pest on asparagus ( Asparagus ).

Danger

Euxoa cursoria occurs in Germany in the northern federal states, is usually rare there and therefore classified in category 2 (severely endangered) on the Red List of Endangered Species .

Systematics

The genus Euxoa is divided into four sub-genera by Fibiger (1990). He places the species in the nominate sub-genus Euxoa (Euxoa) Hübner, 1821. In a correction to the first volume of the Noctuidae Europaea he places the z. T. regarded Euxoa virima Hardwick as a separate species, and in 1965 as a subspecies of Euxoa cursoria .
