Eva (grape variety)

The autochthonous white wine variety Eva is native to Extremadura in south-west Spain. It is approved for the production of quality wines in the Denominación de Origen ( DO ) Ribera del Guadiana . In the Matanegra subzone of this DO, Eva is a grape variety recommended for main use. The cultivation area in the DO Ribera del Guadiana is 167 hectares (status 2007). Smaller vineyards are also known in Portugal.

The grape variety is sensitive to low temperatures and humidity during flowering. Eva produces wines with a greenish yellow color and good acidity.

In addition to making wine, Eva is also used as a table grape .

The grape variety Eva is also known under the names Beba, Beba de los Santos, Beba de los Santos de Maimona, Beba de Palos, Beba Dorada, Beba Dorada de Huelva, Beba Dorada de Jaen, Beba Dorada de Jerez, Beva, Bevah, Bevan, Eva de los Santos and Eva de los Santos de Maimona are known.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is only slightly hairy. The whitish-light green young leaves are lightly hairy cobwebs.
  • The large, light green leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented. The stem bay is lyren-shaped open. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are medium-sized compared to other grape varieties
  • The grape is medium-sized and has loose berries. The slightly oval berries are medium to large in size and golden yellow in color.

The grape variety ripens around 35 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen late.
