history

The "Red Church" owes its nickname to the brick with which the walls are decorated. The church was built in 1905 in neo-Gothic style according to the plans of the Arad architect Lajos Szántay and completed in 1906. In the same year the church was consecrated by Bishop Sámuel Sárkány.

description

The neo-Gothic sacred building is in the middle of Luther-Platz. The main tower of the church with a height of 46 meters is bordered by two smaller polygonal side towers. The outer frame of the main portal bears the inscription Jöjjetek énhozzám ( Come to me ).

The church has a central nave, two aisles and a transept . The altar is in neo-Gothic style. The altarpiece, a painting from 1848 depicting The Prayer of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemani , was made by the painter Josef Umlauf . The pulpit was made by the sculptor György Örr from Košice (now Slovakia ). The windows with neo-Gothic stained glass by József Palka from Budapest , which depict the 13 apostles, are remarkable.

The electro-pneumatic organ by Carl Leopold Wegenstein was built in Timișoara and assembled in 1927. The organ has 25 registers , 2 manuals , a pneumatic play and stop action mechanism and a neo-Gothic case . Concerts take place here regularly in cooperation with the Arad Philharmonic.

When it was completed, the church had three bells with a total weight of 1590 kilos, which were made by the well-known Arad bell caster Frigyes Hönig. The two large bells were melted down during World War I and used to make cannons; only the small bell remained in the church.
