The Protestant Johanneskirche is a listed church building in Hamm-Norden , district Hamm-Bockum-Hövel of the independent city of Hamm in North Rhine-Westphalia .

History and architecture

The rectangular brick building was built from 1937 to 1938 according to plans by Bernhard Hopp . The tower is to the side of the entrance porch. The exterior of the building is characterized by dark, undivided wall surfaces with ribbon windows on the round and longitudinal windows on the gable ends. Inside, a wooden barrel vault rests on wooden stands. It is accompanied by aisle-like flat-roofed side aisles. The so-called crypt with the cemetery chapel is located under the chancel .

On the occasion of its 75th anniversary of construction, the church was named Monument of the Month in Westphalia-Lippe in April 2013 by the LWL Monument Preservation, Landscape and Building Culture in Westphalia .

Furnishing

The furnishings and artistic design have been preserved from the time the church was built. The rose window by Elisabeth Coester is remarkable . Pulpit, altar and baptismal font are arranged axially staggered in height. Ernst Barlach was commissioned to design the baptismal font. However, the work remained unfinished due to his death. It is considered to be the last work on which he laid his hand creatively. The metal designer Eva Dittrich was commissioned in 1938 to design the sacrament tableware.
