The Evangelical Church "Schifflein Christi" was a church building in Glogau (Polish Głogów ). It was designed by Carl Gotthard Langhans and built between 1764 and 1772.

history

The Protestant church "Schifflein Christi" was built in 1764–1772 in the city center of Glogau, southwest of the parish church. It served as a replacement for the Friedenskirche , which burned down in 1758 and was located outside the city walls.

The design in the style of early classicism came from the Landeshut architect Carl Gotthard Langhans.

The three-aisled church building was erected on a rectangular floor plan of around 25 × 50 m. The two towers, crowned with domed roofs, were later added to the main facade. 1796–1797, the domes of the towers were replaced by high, pointed roofs. The church was covered with a hipped roof.

At the end of the Second World War , the church was badly damaged. Reconstruction was possible after 1945. On November 25, 1949, it was entered in the register of architectural monuments under number 40. Nevertheless, the walls that were still preserved were removed in 1962.

In 2003, a lapidarium designed by the architect Dariusz Wojtowicz was built on the site of the church . It shows the outline of the church designed by Langhans, although the south side could not be restored for legal reasons. The walls and pillars made of clinker brick were built to different heights. The paving stone floor inside is about 80 cm below the surrounding area. In July 2006, a three-part sculpture group " Conditio humana " was exhibited in the Lapidarium , a copy of the diploma thesis by the sculptor Renata Banaś.

A bell of the church (cast in 1924), which survived the Second World War in the Hamburg bell cemetery, now hangs in the Protestant St. Stephen's Church in Würzburg .
