The Evangelical Parish Church in the Neuwied district of Engers in Rhineland-Palatinate was built in 1900 in neo-late Romanesque forms. The church belongs to the Wied church district in the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland and bears the name of the theologian and resistance fighter Dietrich Bonhoeffer . It has been a listed building since 2003 .

history

Engers had belonged to Kurtrier since the middle of the 14th century and was Catholic until the beginning of the 19th century. After the Rhineland became Prussian in 1815, various Prussian administrative authorities were established in Koblenz and the surrounding area, and the officials who were delegated here by Prussia were usually Protestant. The first Protestant Christians in Engers were looked after by the parish of Bendorf from 1819. After the “Royal War School” was established in Engers Castle in 1862 , the military pastor looked after the community. On June 1, 1900, Engers received the rights of an independent parish , which, however, remained connected to the parish of Bendorf under a parish office.

On the initiative of Georg von Viebahn , commander of the war school, construction of the church began in 1900. The church was built by Carl Grieß from Bendorf according to plans by the Koblenz architect Erhard Müller in neo-late Romanesque forms. The foundation stone was laid in November 1901 and on February 2, 1902 the solemn consecration took place in the presence of high spiritual and political dignitaries.

Construction and equipment

Building description

The gallery church rises on an almost cruciform floor plan, although the cross arm on the southeast side is only indicated by a slightly protruding gable. As with the other gables on the east and west sides , the roof is hipped over this . Only the north-western gable extends to the roof ridge and is adorned with a finial . The church is dominated by a tower with a pointed pyramid roof . The architectural structure in red sandstone stands out from the white wall surfaces .

Furnishing

The furnishings are simple and, apart from four stone reliefs depicting the evangelists , lacks pieces from the building period. The high tracery windows determine the character of the room.
