Evangelical Church in Engelstadt

The Protestant church in Engelstadt is a hall from the 13th century. Originally the church was dedicated to Saint Mauritius .

history

In 1228 the church was dedicated to St. Mauritius consecrated. In the same year, a pastor was first mentioned in Engelstadt. In addition to the pastor, a chaplain had been active at the church since 1295 at the latest.

The church patronage at that time lay with the collegiate monastery St. Andreas in Cologne . Because of the large distance to Cologne this Chorherrenstift exchanged in 1324, the patronage right to the Mainzer Liebfrauenstift with the permission of the archbishops of Cologne and Mainz against its in the archdiocese of Cologne Situated goods in Geylen and his church patronage in Rumer churches . The formal occupation before the notary and witnesses took place on March 28, 1325.

As a result of the Reformation , church conditions changed in 1556. The Reformed , to whom the church was awarded in the Palatinate church division of 1705 , took over the parish. In 1591 a reformed school was founded in Engelstadt. During the Thirty Years' War the church was set on fire and burned down in 1620, with a barn serving as a temporary replacement. The Catholics built a chapel in the town hall in 1697, which was dedicated to Saint Servatius .

Exterior

The mighty, west-facing Romanesque tower from the 12th century is structured by pilaster strips and arched friezes. On the south side of the tower there is a portal with a wide, significant relief lintel , which is dated to the end of the 11th century , a relief arch with a rectangular frame rises above this lintel . The symbols on this lintel point to the history of salvation .

During the Second World War , the tower was partially destroyed by an attack on March 15, 1945.

The nave is a hall from the 13th century. It is closed by an east - facing choir closed on three sides and is late Gothic with baroque changes.

The church and the cemetery formed a defense system until around 1830, when the fortifications were removed . The cemetery extends to the present day - as was customary in the past - around the church, while in most of the neighboring parishes the "Gottesacker" has been relocated from the town center.

After the single-glazed windows were destroyed in a storm in 1994, they were replaced by colored glass in the same year.

Bells

During the First World War , a bell was supposed to be handed in to be melted down in 1917, but it was secretly buried. In 1942 the bell had to be delivered in the course of the “ metal donation of the German people ”, but it was found in a bell cemetery near Hamburg in 1947 and returned to the bell chamber in 1948.
