The foundation of the Evangelical Church in Germany for the assumption of overall church responsibility in Wittenberg - Evangelical Wittenberg Foundation is a non-profit foundation of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) based in Lutherstadt Wittenberg .

Story and purpose

With the resolution of the ecclesiastical law to set up the foundation for the performance of church-wide tasks in Wittenberg at the 7th meeting of the 10th Synod of the Evangelical Church in Germany , the foundation started work on January 1st, 2009. The foundation was established in order to take up the Reformation concerns of Martin Luther in Lutherstadt Wittenberg as the place of origin of the Reformation and to fill them with life. To this end, the foundation aims to educate and inform visitors and guests of Lutherstadt about the history and significance of Lutherstadt for the Reformation. The purpose of the foundation is in particular the establishment of the center for worship and preaching culture (since 2009), the increased use of the Wittenberg Castle Church , the church-wide important encounter and educational work as well as the acquisition of land and cultural assets, their management and protection. The EKD Council can, in coordination with the church conference, assign further tasks to the foundation. The foundation's assets in January 2009 were 322,000 euros .

The foundation bodies are the board of directors and a board of trustees . The chairman of the council of the EKD chairs the board of trustees, the regional bishop of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany takes over the deputy. The Board of Trustees and the Board of Directors appoint a managing director who must be in the service of the EKD. The foundation supervision lies with the Evangelical Church in Central Germany.

Pastor Renke Brahms has been the director of the Wittenberg Foundation since 2019 .
