The Evangelische Gymnasium Wien is a private general education secondary school in Simmering , Vienna's 11th district; at the same time it has a special branch of training, the Werkschulheim .
history
This school was founded in 1996/97 with only one class, which was housed in the Evangelical Primary School on Karlsplatz . A year later, classrooms in HTL IV (Argentinierstrasse) were rented. In the years 1999/2000 the school already had six classes, so a branch in Gudrunstraße was rented. From the 2000/2001 school year there was again enough space on Argentinierstrasse. However, the owner of the building announced his own use a little later, so that from 2003 a new place for the accommodation was sought intensively. In the end, the property developer rented a suitable plot of land at Erdbergstrasse 222A, on which the new construction also started. In 2006 the grammar school was reopened at its new location, where it is still based today.
School offer
The grammar school offers increased craft lessons in the lower level Werkschulheim. In the secondary school , which two thirds of the students chose in 2014, in addition to the Matura, qualified vocational training in goldsmithing as a goldsmith and silversmith, carpentry as a carpenter or IT technology is acquired. At the modern language branch of the grammar school, a normal Matura is taken without an apprenticeship. The school is the only general secondary school in Vienna that offers a combination of vocational training and Matura. In Austria there was something similar in 2014 only in the Felbertal near Salzburg, the Felbertal Werkschulheim , which has been in existence since 1959 .

The private school is an institution of diaconal education . The director is the theologian Elisabeth Sinn.
Awards
The school was named School of the Month for June 2007 by a jury of the Wiener Zeitung because of the “possibility of high school diploma, apprenticeship completion and social projects” .
In 2018, a team from the school won the First Lego League regional competition in Vienna and qualified for the semi-finals in Austria.
