The Werkschulheim Felbertal is a private high school with public rights and offers a combination of a general secondary school and a craft training. The Werkschulheim is the model model for dual training in Austria (AHS Matura and craft qualification up to master craftsman's certificate). There is also a boarding school for boys and girls. The school is located in the state of Salzburg , in Ebenau im Flachgau ; the school maintainer is the association for the promotion of factory school homes.

history

In August 1951 the 7th World Jamboree (International Scout Camp) took place in Bad Ischl. In the process, some scouts came up with the idea of founding such a school in Austria based on the Bavarian model - in Berchtesgaden there was already a Werkschulheim at that time. One month later, the foundation stone for the Werkschulheim in Felbertal near Mittersill in Salzburg's Pinzgau was laid by the formation of the Association for the Promotion of Werkschulheimen as a school provider .

The first school year of the Werkschulheim began on September 14, 1951 in two wooden block houses with 10 barely German-speaking refugee children, 15 Austrian students and six adults, including the founding fathers Walter Katstaller, Josef Löw, Alexej Stachowitsch and Rupert Staudinger. A few years after it was founded, it had risen to become a “ model school ” in Austria .

In July 1954, the Werkschulheim was granted public rights. From this point in time, the Werkschulheim was able to issue state-valid certificates. Before that, all exams had to be held in front of external commissions.

At the time, there was a choice between carpentry and metalworking. Radio mechanics was only introduced as a third option from the 1955/56 school year. Difficulties were increasingly caused by the lack of space, so that no new first classes could be accepted in 1956 and 1957. The remoteness and the distance from Salzburg also became a problem, especially in winter.

So it was decided to change location. Ideal conditions were found near the town of Ebenau on an extensive plateau with a view of the Wiestal reservoir below . In 1961 the new building of the Werkschulheim began and in 1964 the new buildings could be occupied.

From the beginning, the school set itself the goal of combining high school education with technical training, so that every graduate receives a high school diploma and journeyman's certificate. Boy scout ideas, such as the small group as a unit and extracurricular learning in project and adventure weeks, are still carried out today.

In the Werkschulheim, the original warehouse gate from the World Jamboree in Bad Ischl reminds of the founding year 1951. There is also a scout group in the Werkschulheim that meets regularly at home.

Education and training

The high school offers general education and promotes the cognitive, creative and athletic abilities of the students. In the entire lower level, the intensive technical handicraft lessons form a special focus. The pupils are introduced to the materials wood and metal, which at the end of the 4th grade makes it easier for them to choose a trade.

In addition to the high school education, there is also technical training in the professions of mechatronics, mechanical engineering or carpentry technology. The graduates complete their nine-year schooling with a journeyman's examination and the AHS Matura . This double qualification entitles on the one hand to study at university and on the other hand creates the prerequisite for taking the master craftsman's examination . After the journeyman's examination, students can also complete modules from the master craftsman examination. These preparatory courses at the Werkschulheim Felbertal make it possible to acquire a master craftsman's certificate from the Salzburg Chamber of Commerce after graduating from high school.

Boarding school

The Werkschulheim is run as a full and half boarding school. In the boarding school attached to the school, the students are looked after in small groups (maximum of twelve young people). In the boarding school there are twin rooms with bathroom and balcony, as well as TV and internet connections and, since the 2016/2017 school year, WiFi is available. Common areas serve as a meeting point. Students from the surrounding communities are looked after in the half-boarding school (day care) in separate groups until 5:00 p.m. daily.

In the boarding school, value is placed on an appreciative and tolerant interaction with one another and on the acquisition of an independent and self-motivated learning and working attitude. Living together also promotes social components such as a sense of responsibility and independence. The daily routine is clearly structured and includes daily core learning times with support and guidance from the supervisor; These are in close cooperation with the teachers and parents with the help of an internal information system (intranet). The diverse range of leisure activities ensures balance in everyday school life. The annual adventure and project weeks are a special highlight.
