Everybody Needs a Best Friend is the theme song from the 2012 comedy film Ted . The music is by Walter Murphy and the lyrics were written by Seth MacFarlane , the director of the film. The song was sung by soul and jazz singer Norah Jones . The song was also released on the film's soundtrack on June 26, 2012 through Universal Republic Records .

History of origin

Seth MacFarlane hired Walter Murphy to create the soundtrack and sent him a script. He had an old-fashioned form of film music in mind, in which each character is given an individual theme and a theme song. Murphy was very interested in it as this form had become uncommon for blockbuster films. For the theme song, MacFarlane had initially written another text, on the basis of which Murphy wrote the theme song. Murphy wrote the music in the style of band leader Nelson Riddle , who had recorded a few movie songs in his career. During the shoot, however, MacFarlane had the idea to tell the song from the teddy bear's perspective. So he rewrote the song.

MacFarlane finally asked Norah Jones if she could sing the song and she agreed. With a version of the song on Pro Tools , MacFarlane flew to New York and had the piece recorded with a 60-strong big band including a string orchestra .

In the film itself, the song appears in the opening credits and is repeated several times in its instrumental version, so that it also functions as the title melody .

Oscar nomination

The song received an Oscar nomination for Best Motion Picture Song and was subsequently presented live for the first time on February 8, 2013 on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno . At the Academy Awards 2014 , Norah Jones also performed with the song. However, the song lost to the James Bond title song Skyfall .
