Ewald Katzschmann

Ewald Lothar Max Katzschmann (born April 18, 1913 in Oschatz ; † June 10, 1994 in Witten ) was a German chemist.

Life

After graduating from high school in Oschatz, Ewald Katzschmann began working as a laboratory assistant in the former Märkische soap industry in Witten in 1932 . Between 1940 and 1944 he studied chemistry at the Technical University of Dresden and joined Imhausen-Chemie in 1946 as a graduate chemist - the later Chemische Werke Witten.

In 1951 he developed a process for the production of dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) by air oxidation of p-xylene . It is also called the Katzschmann process .

He also found that in a technical mixture of xylene isomers, the p-xylene is first oxidized quantitatively. Isophthalic acid and phthalic acid can also be produced by this process.

Over 32 licenses have been granted worldwide for this process and around 25% of the global demand for the polyester raw material DMT is produced according to this .

In 1964 he received the Dechema Prize for developing this process .

Katzschmann was married and had a son and a daughter.
