Exobasidium perenne is a mushroom art family of Nacktbasidienverwandten (Exobasidiaceae) from the order Ustilaginomycotina . It is an endoparasite of the large fruited and common cranberries . Symptoms of infestation by the fungus are hypertrophic discoloration and increased growth of the leaves of the host plant. The range of the species includes the Canadian Nova Scotia .
features
Macroscopic features
Exobasidium perenne cannot be seen with the naked eye. Symptoms of the infestation are hypertrophic , red or yellow spots on the infested leaves, which also have increased growth and a flattened shape.
Microscopic features
As with all naked basidia , the mycelium of Exobasidium perenne grows intercellularly and forms suction threads that grow into the host's storage tissue. The fungus has a monomitic hypha structure made up of purely generative hyphae without buckles . The two-pore, 15-25 × 3.5-4.3 µm large basidia are simply septate at the base. They grow directly from the host epidermis . The spores are hyaline , cylindrical to banana-shaped, thin-walled and 12–19 × 1.7–2.6 µm in size. When ripe they have one to three septa . The conidia of the species are 9–17.5 × 1–1.7 µm in size and cylindrical to pointed.
distribution
The known range of Exobasidum perenne is in Nova Scotia in eastern Canada .
ecology
The host plants of Exobasidium perenne are the large fruited ( Vaccinium macrocarpon ) and the common cranberry ( V. oxycoccos ). The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its basidia later break through the leaf surface and release spores. After they have fallen on a suitable substrate, these germinate into conidia , from which new mycelium then develops.
