Ezinqoleni (also Izinqoleni , before Ezingoleni , English Ezinqoleni Local Municipality ) was a municipality in the district of Ugu , KwaZulu-Natal Province in South Africa . The seat of the municipal administration was Izingolweni . Makhosezwe Amon Mpisi was the last mayor. The ANC last provided the majority in the local council.

In 2011 the community had 52,540 inhabitants according to the census.

In 2016, after the regional elections, the parish merged with the Hibiscus Coast parish to form the newly founded parish Ray Nkonyeni .

Naming

Ezinqoleni is an isiZulu word meaning 'by the wagons'. Around 1870 a resting place was created here between the coast and the hinterland. Freight traffic at that time was carried out by carts pulled by donkeys and mules. Because the white immigrants did not pronounce this word correctly, the name was later changed to Izinqoleni. When the church was established, it was decided to use the correct, original name for the church. The wrong spelling of the name remained in the case of the later administrative seat of the municipality.

geography

Ezinqoleni was in the southwest of the district and bordered on the south by the municipality of Mbizana in the Eastern Cape Province . In the west was the then municipality Hibiscus Coast , east uMuziwabantu and north Umzumbe (municipality) . It was the smallest community in the Ugu District. The parish covers an area of 648 square kilometers. The most important places in the parish were Izingolweni, Nqabeni and Paddock .

economy

The community was located in a hilly area crossed by water. The Oribi Gorge Gorge with the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve was one of the scenic attractions . However, the topography made access to the touristically interesting areas more difficult. Individual areas were not accessible, especially during the rainy season. Nearly half of the parish was under the Ingonyama Trust .

The main economic mainstay of the community was agriculture. Mainly sugar cane , tea and macadamia nuts were grown.
