history

The name Fürstenbrünnchen arose from an earlier mineral water fountain , which was located here with the name "am hillije Pötzje" (= at the holy spring). Supposedly, Elector Johann Wilhelm II (popularly: "Jan Wellem") discovered the natural, carbonic source during a hunt. From 1909 to 1929 the mineral water was marketed under the brand name Fürstenbrünnchen and a picture of the elector on the label. When the groundwater was permanently contaminated by the nearby Bensberg-Gladbacher Zinkhütte , the tap had to be abandoned and sealed.
