Frank James Rohlf (born October 24, 1936 in Blythe, California ) is an American zoologist and biostatistician who worked as a professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara , the University of Kansas and from 1969 to 2004 at the State University of New York at Stony Brook acted. In his research, he mainly dealt with the application of mathematical and statistical methods in the field of biology. He has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2001 .

Life

F. James Rohlf was born in Blythe , California , in 1936 and received a bachelor's degree from San Diego State College in 1958, majoring in zoology , mathematics, and chemistry . Four years later his doctorate he attended the University of Kansas in the field of entomology .

He then worked from 1962 to 1966 as an assistant professor of biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara , before returning to the University of Kansas, where he was an associate professor of statistical biology from 1966 to 1969. From there he moved to the State University of New York at Stony Brook , where he remained as professor of biology until his retirement in 2004 and headed the department of ecology and evolutionary biology from 1975 to 1980 and 1990 to 1991.

F. James Rohlf has been married since 1959 and has two daughters.

Scientific work

F. James Rohlf's research interests concern the application of mathematical and statistical methods, especially multivariate methods , to solve problems in the field of biology . He mainly focuses on topics from the areas of morphometry and systematics . Together with his colleague Robert R. Sokal , he published the book "Biometry: The Principles and Practice of Statistics in Biological Research", which is considered a standard work in the field of biostatistics and has been published in four editions since 1969.

Awards

F. James Rohlf has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2001 . On his retirement from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, he received the title SUNY Distinguished Professor emeritus . In 2006 he was named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science . The “Rohlf Medal for Excellence in the Field of Morphometric Methods and Applications”, which has been awarded every two years by the State University of New York at Stony Brook since 2011, is named after him.
