FEZ was a jazz band in the GDR that existed from 1974 to 1977. They were "one of the first professional jazz bands in the GDR."

Band history

FEZ was founded in 1974 by jazz musicians from the Hannes Zerbe Band to accompany the Bahamas- born jazz and blues singer Etta Cameron at concerts in the GDR. Conny Bauer and Christoph Niemann came from the Exis quartet . In 1974 the band made their first appearance at the Jazz in der Kammer series of events . From 1973 to 1975, Bauer was also a member of the band Synopsis . 1975 followed as the group FEZ with Sunday in Indian summer the first recording on a long-playing record. Peter Blazeowsky played the bass.

The characteristic of the band was the variety of styles. While Bauer and Niemann came from free jazz , pianist Zerbe played more swing and drummer Gröning rock . The band processed influences from jazz musicians like Charlie Parker and John Coltrane and was known for spontaneous improvisation. The majority of the original compositions came from Conny Bauer. In 1978 the band's only album, FEZ , was released by Amiga . At this point in time, FEZ had already disbanded.
