Christoph Niemann (born February 6, 1953 in Königs Wusterhausen ) is a German double bass player in the field of jazz and classical music as well as arranger and composer .

Live and act

Christoph Niemann studied double bass from 1975–77 at the “Hanns Eisler” University of Music in Berlin and, after moving to West Berlin in 1977, from 1978 to 1980 at the Berlin University of the Arts . He worked as a composer, arranger and interpreter in various chamber music ensembles and jazz groups, including a. in the formation Exis (1971–73) with Conny Bauer , from 1974 to early 1977 in the jazz group FEZ with Hannes Zerbe and Conny Bauer, to be heard on the Amiga album of the same name (1977).

In addition, Niemann played with many well-known jazz musicians, such as in Ulrich Gumpert's Workshop Band , Manfred Schulze , Andy Altenfelder , Joe Sachse , Manfred Hering , Aladár Pege , Bronisław Suchanek , Leo Wright , Wolfgang Köhler and Rolf von Nordenskjöld . He also accompanied a. a. Etta Cameron , Madeline Bell , Georgie Fame , Bill Ramsey , Jocelyn B. Smith , Elly Wright , Ruth Hohmann and Pascal von Wroblewsky .

He has been a member since 1978 and since 1995 deputy solo double bass player in the orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin . From 1980 to 1990 he played in the Duo Tedesco with the cellist Bernd Teichgräber, to be heard on the LP Duo Tedesco Berlin: Music for Violoncello and Double Bass (1983). Since 1988 he works a. a. with the chamber soloists of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. conducted by Tomasz Tomaszewski , to be heard on the CD of the same name (Marus). Also under the direction of Tomaszewski, he played in the Salon Orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, to be heard on the Vienna-Berlin album (2007). In 2008 he recorded two CDs with the Chamber Ensemble Classic of the Deutsche Oper Berlin : Johan Reuter: Rare Verdi and Wookyung Kim: Hugo / Schiller / Goethe (both Michael Storrs Music).

Under the direction of Rolf von Nordenskjöld he plays in the big band of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, can be heard as a soloist on the CDs Premiere (Mons Records 2009) and How long is now? (Mons 2010). As part of the Deutsche Oper, he also works in the series of events Jazz and Breakfast , together with Rüdiger Ruppert and Sebastian Krol. He has been involved in the Lyrik - Jazz - Prosa series of events since the mid-nineties , initially in the Herrmann Anders band, to be heard on the CD Jazz Lyrik Prosa II (BuschFunk), later in the Mäcky Gäbler Quartet on the Hansgeorg Stengel album . Kalauer / Doppelsalto (Eulenspiegel) and the CD Jazz Lyrik Prosa III (BuschFunk, 2004). He is currently working with the jazz formation Triologic , consisting of Thomas Andelfinger (guitar) and Rüdiger Ruppert (drums) and Falk Breitkreuz (saxophone), to be heard on the album Seasons ( Mons Records , 2010) in a quartet with saxophonist Steffen Weber .

As a composer, he has published compositions for various jazz and chamber music ensembles.
