In the 1960s, cultural events with a mixture of jazz music and readings of poetry and prose took place in the GDR under the name Lyrik - Jazz - Prosa .

history

In 1963 the advertising manager of the Volk und Welt publishing house , Werner Sellhorn , launched the “Jazz und Lyrik” publishing event. In 1964/65 it was performed almost 100 times in many cities in the GDR. For the series of events mainly cheerful and satirical poems were selected from the books of the publisher. One of the reciters was the actor and musician Manfred Krug . The musicians mostly performed were the Berlin amateur band Jazz Optimists Berlin in the Dixieland style and Manfred Krug as a jazz singer. Already in the series “Jazz and Lyrik” guests occasionally took part as singers or reciters. These included the jazz singer Ruth Hohmann , the actors Annekathrin Bürger , Angelica Domröse , Eberhard Esche , Edwin Marian and Gerry Wolff , the cabaret artist Gerd E. Schäfer , the songwriter Wolf Biermann and the actress and singer Eva-Maria Hagen .

At an event in 1965, Wolf Biermann was denied participation in a performance of “Jazz and Lyrik”. As a result, the other artists, including Manfred Krug, refused to begin with the performance.

Gradually, more and more prose texts were recorded. Therefore, at the end of 1965, the program was renamed "Lyrik - Jazz - Prosa". During the runtime of “Jazz und Lyrik” and “Lyrik - Jazz - Prosa” the performances were always sold out. At the turn of the year 1966/67 the series of events "Lyrik - Jazz - Prosa" came to an end. For a while there were events that combined jazz with other art forms, such as “Jazz and Dance” and “Jazz & Folksongs ”.

Elements of the jazz and literature series were occasionally taken up in the following. For example, Manfred Krug performed poetry and prose again at concerts with the Klaus Lenz Band .

Publications

Recordings of two events in Berlin were published on Amiga records. In 1965 the LP Jazz and Lyrik von ein Konzert was created in 1964. Three years later, after long arguments with cultural officials, the LP Lyrik - Jazz - Prosa von ein Konzert 1965 was published. A new edition without the pieces with Manfred Krug followed in 1983.

At the end of November 1995 the Amiga label of Hansa-Musikproduktion (in the BMG Ariola group ) released a CD under the modified title Jazz - Lyrik - Prosa , which contains the majority of the music titles published at the time and all the recited titles of both LPs. By mid-2000 there were three editions; the number of copies sold was over 60,000.

Rebirth

“Jazz - Lyrik - Prosa” is the title of a new series of events which, after a gap of more than 30 years, saw well over 160 performances in the spring of 1997 with a number of popular actors, various bands and groups of jazz as well as a large number of special programs.

With a few exceptions, it is no longer just Dixielandjazz that forms the musical basis, but also more modern ways of playing jazz. In contrast to other projects with jazz, lyric poetry and prose, this one does not usually offer a thematic connection, but a mixture of texts on a high artistic level. Funny or satirical texts are preferred.

In addition to the general program with changing participants, special special programs have recently been offered. Werner Sellhorn was the initiator of the series as program designer and moderator until his death in 2009.
