Steffen "Larose" Weber (born June 4, 1975 in Mosbach ) is a German jazz musician ( saxophone , clarinet ), music teacher and composer .

Live and act

Weber grew up in Mosbach, where he also completed his school education with the Abitur. On the advice of his mother, he learned to play the saxophone at the age of 15. During his basic military service in 1994/95 he was a saxophonist in Air Force Music Corps 1 in Karlsruhe . From 1995 to 1999 he studied saxophone at the Musikhochschule Mannheim jazz and popular music with Jürgen Seefelder . From 1991 to 1995 he was a member of the Baden-Württemberg State Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Bernd Konrad . From 1996 to 1998 he was a member of the Federal Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Peter Herbolzheimer . He also worked as a musician at the Nationaltheater Mannheim in the productions Weekend in Paradies and Die Blume von Hawaii . He also played in various big bands such as the Bobby Burgess Big Band Explosion , the Sunday Night Orchestra and the Rainer Tempel Big Band.

From 1998 he belonged to the formation Mardi Gras.bb , on whose albums Supersmell (2000), Zen Rodeo (2002), Heat (2003) and 29 Moonglow (2004) he can be heard. Since the 2000s he has been working with various band projects, such as Triologic around Rüdiger Ruppert and 4 nach 12 . Weber also considered musically formative member of the Mannheim neo-bop jazz -Formation L14,16 with trumpeter Axel Schlosser , pianist Rainer Böhm , bassist Arne Huber and drummer Lars Binder. From 2008 he belonged to the SWR Big Band . Since the beginning of 2012 he has been the second tenor saxophonist in the hr big band .

Weber has performed at international festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival , Montreux , Umbria Jazz , Cannes , Montreal Jazz Festival and Jazz Baltica . He also worked on recordings by Joey DeFrancesco , Jeff Hamilton , Chris Potter , Greg Osby , Joe Lovano , Sammy Nestico and Stephanie Wagner . Weber taught at the Mannheim University of Music (1995–99) and is a lecturer in jazz saxophone at the Mainz University of Music .

Awards

With the band L14,16 he won the 24th International Jazz Competition in Hoeilaart (Belgium). Their debut album was awarded the quarterly prize of the German record critics in 2003. Weber received the jazz prize of the city of Worms in 2005 . He won first prize in the ensemble evaluation at the 29th international jazz competition in Getxo (Spain). In 2009 he received a scholarship from the Baden-Württemberg Art Foundation .
