The FFH area Staatsforst southeast of Handewitt is a NATURA 2000 protected area in Schleswig-Holstein , in the Schleswig-Flensburg district in the municipality of Handewitt. It has an area of 17 hectares and is part of the 590 hectare Handewitter Forest . The FFH area is located in the fishing natural area , which, according to the landscape profile of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation, is classified as one of the "landscapes of minor importance" based on a natural assessment. The FFH area is owned by Schleswig-Holsteinische Landesforsten A.ö.R. The administration of the FFH area is carried out by the Glücksburg forestry department .

FFH area history and nature conservation area

The NATURA 2000 standard data sheet for the FFH area Staatsforst southeast of Handewitt was created in June 2004 by the State Office for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas (LLUR) of Schleswig-Holstein, and in September 2004 by the EU nature conservation authority as an area of community importance (GGB) proposed, confirmed by the EU as GGB in November 2007 and confirmed nationally as a special conservation area (BEG) in January 2010 in accordance with § 32 Paragraph 2 to 4 BNatSchG in conjunction with § 23 LNatSchG. On May 2, 2011, the management plan for the FFH area state forest southeast of Handewitt was published by the then Ministry for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas of the State of Schleswig-Holstein. This is updated continuously.

FFH conservation object

The FFH object of conservation (according to the standard data sheet as of May 2019) has been submitted to the EU by the following 4 FFH habitat types of Annex I of the FFH Directive of particular importance :

The degree of conservation of all named habitat types is rated as C (average to poor degree of conservation).

In the 2011 management plan, only habitat types (LRT) 9190 and 4030 were mentioned.

FFH conservation objectives

For the FFH area, only the habitat type 9190 is reported in the standard data sheet as being extremely representative . The two FFH habitat types 9190 and 4030 are listed in the 2011 management plan. The LRT 9190 is an Eichenkratt , of which only a few have survived in Schleswig-Holstein. Both FFH habitat types were mapped in the FFH area.

FFH analysis and assessment

The FFH analysis and assessment serves to identify problems in the maintenance and development of the FFH conservation objectives. Maintaining the Kratt means a lot of money. Kratts are maintenance-intensive. Invasive species are proliferating and need to be suppressed. Extensive grazing must be used in a targeted manner, on the one hand to reduce bush cover and on the other hand to limit browsing on the young oak shoots. The Kratt seems to be an ideal habitat for beetles. An inspection in 2008 revealed a variety of different species. The first biotope mapping of the FFH area was carried out in 2011 .

FFH catalog of measures

The measures already carried out as well as planned and desirable are described in the management plan of 2011, specified in tabular form in action sheets and recorded on a map. This also includes the constant conversion of coniferous to beech and oak forests with crusting. This corresponds to the principles of action of the Schleswig-Holstein State Forests in FFH areas.

FFH success control and monitoring of the measures

In Schleswig-Holstein, the implementation of the measures is randomly checked every 6 years. The first follow-up mapping of the FFH habitat types was carried out in 2017. It consists of a biotope sheet with a map for each biotope or FFH habitat type, see individual records in Table 1.

9110 Grove beech forests k. A. 4.7956 ha 4.8 ha

6510 Lean, lowland hay meadows k. A. 2.4981 ha 2.5 ha
4030 Dry Heath 0.3 ha 0.3256 ha 0.3 ha

Table 1 shows the differences in the mappings in assessing the size of the FFH habitat types (LRT) of the forests. The difficulty arises in particular with forest conversion . The LRT 9110, which is most widely represented in this FFH area, is, according to biotope arches 401, a “young reforestation with beeches and oaks, whereby the beeches are overall more frequent and older than the oaks”.
