Due to health policy requirements, there were comparatively few doctors in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) who were active in laboratory diagnostics in the field of medicine . The medical scientists were thus responsible for this and for related specialist areas, including the creation and interpretation of findings , and were treated as doctors in these areas . As part of the further training to become a specialist in medicine, analogous to the training as a specialist, specialization in a certain subject area, such as " Clinical chemistry and laboratory diagnostics ", " Human genetics ", " Diagnostic and experimental microbiology ", " Cytology / histology ", " Immunology " “ Biochemistry ”, “ Medicinal Toxicology / Toxicological Chemistry ”, “ Biophysics ” or “ Biomedical Engineering ”.

In 1990 there were around 700 trained medical specialists specializing in "clinical chemistry and laboratory diagnostics" in the GDR.

Legal situation since 1990

After reunification in the accession area, the unification agreement gave protection to the existing status through a temporary suspension of the doctor's reservation for the corresponding services, so that medical scientists could initially continue their work until the end of 1994. Since then, in the federal states of Berlin , Brandenburg , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, they have been fundamentally authorized to carry out and account for medical laboratory examinations in their respective fields.

On the basis of this legal situation, a considerable part of laboratory medical diagnostics is still carried out by medical scientists in the mentioned federal states, both in clinical laboratories and in private practice.

In addition, depending on state law, you can be a member of the respective state medical association and statutory health insurance association .

According to the guidelines for recognition as clinical chemists of the German Association for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (DGKL), medical scientists specializing in "clinical chemistry and laboratory diagnostics" are recognized as clinical chemists with advanced training.

Specialists in medicine specializing in "human genetics" can, on request, be recognized as specialist human geneticists in accordance with the advanced training regulations of the German Society for Human Genetics . The Professional Association of German Human Genetics (BVDH) is the professional policy forum for all specialists in human genetics and human geneticists (GfH).

The Network of Specialists in Medicine (nfm) represents the interests of the natural scientists working in medicine with different specializations such as human geneticists (GfH), clinical chemists and reproductive biologists.
