The flag hill is a Neolithic burial mound near Lutherstadt Eisleben in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz , Saxony-Anhalt . In 1837 a beaker of the late Neolithic Corded Ceramic Culture (2800-2200 BC) was found here.

location

The hill is located 1.5 km northwest of Eisleben on an elongated ridge, right at a crossroads.

description

The rather large, tree-lined hill was badly damaged by excavations in the 19th century at the latest. More recently, damage was caused by an excavator . In 1837 a cup of the Cord Ceramic Culture was recovered from the hill; the exact circumstances of the find are unknown. The cup has a height of 9 cm and a diameter of 5 cm at the bottom, 8 cm at the belly and 7 cm at the mouth. It has an S-shaped profile, two handles attached to each other on the upper abdomen and an ornament of four circumferential cord lines on the neck and upper abdomen as well as hatched triangles in between. The cup is now in the regional history collections of Lutherstadt Eisleben and is the only find from the flag hill. An investigation by the University of Leipzig in 2003 did not reveal any new findings. It therefore remains unclear whether the hill was built by members of the Cord Ceramic Culture or was simply re-used. After the investigation in 2003, the flag hill was restored.
