The Fahrenberg has been a popular pilgrimage mountain in the Upper Palatinate Forest since the 13th century .
geography
The 801 m high Fahrenberg is located east of the Waldthurn market in the eastern part of the Neustadt an der Waldnaab district . The mountain, largely made of gneiss , occupies a dominant position in the area. In the “Feneisenstein” rock group, which is protected as a natural monument, 300 m south-east of the summit, the moldanubian biotite gneiss typical of western Fahrenberg is exposed. In the eastern area there is a more mica-like gneiss ( diaphthorite ). The forest on the Fahrenberg is increasingly being converted into a natural mixed forest.
history
There was already a castle complex on the Fahrenberg before 1200, which passed to the Knights Templar around 1200. According to tradition, a member of this order brought a statue of Our Lady with him from the Holy Land in 1204. A chapel was built next to the castle, later the castle was converted into a small monastery and the image of Mary was erected there for veneration. This was the beginning of the Marian pilgrimage to the Fahrenberg, which still attracts a large number of believers today. After the turmoil of the Hussite storms , the Reformation period with frequent changes of faith and peasant uprisings and the Thirty Years' War , the Catholic Counter-Reformation initially had a difficult position in the Waldthurner Ländchen, which came under the rule of the Lobkowicz family from Bohemia. In order to revive the pilgrimage that was lying down, they had a new church built on the Fahrenberg, which was completed in 1762. After it was destroyed by fire in 1772, the pilgrimage church was rebuilt in a short time by 1779 and again developed into a center of Marian piety in the Upper Palatinate, which also attracted numerous pilgrims from neighboring Bohemia. This cross-border function, interrupted during the Cold War , has picked up again since the fall of the Iron Curtain .
