Fallout from the Phil Zone is a live - double - compilation album of the band Grateful Dead .

history

The songs from the album were selected by dead bassist Phil Lesh . They come from various concerts the band gave between September 3, 1967 and March 18, 1995. The name Phil Zone comes from a specific area on the stage where the amplifiers for the bass were located. The deadheads that stood in this area gave it this name because you could feel the vibrations of Lesh's bass there.

In addition to well-known songs by the Grateful Dead, the album received the first recording of a 30-minute version of In the Midnight Hour (by Wilson Pickett ) and a 10-minute version of Visions of Johanna (by Bob Dylan ). The Dead song Mason's Children was also not previously heard on any other official album. Although the Deads had a reputation for playing longer versions of In the Midnight Hour , Lesh couldn't find any of them in the recording archive.

The other songs were and are largely known from other concerts and albums, but Lesh described them as rare material, which was not often heard in this way:

It occurred to me a while back that since we'd been releasing more-or-less complete shows in our vault series, it might be interesting to search out some of the rarer material (PA tapes and other reference sources culled from shows that wouldn't have made it out complete), that could stand on its "historical relevance." I also was looking for an excuse to put out some of my old favorites ... "

Since such a period of time is covered by the material, almost all band members who have ever played for the Grateful Dead are represented. Only Bruce Hornsby is not involved in a single song. From 1990 to 1992, after the death of Brent Mydland, he played alongside Tom Constanten as keyboard player , before continuing his solo career. This is because no song was used from between 1989 and 1995.

Looking back, Lesh wished that the recording quality at that time would have been better and that there would also have been more and better video material:

" There is a particularly well-received performance of the Ron" Pigpen "McKernan showcase" Hard to Handle "from 1971 that makes you wish for a higher-quality source than the audience tape included (or a video), if only to give a clue as to what the foot was about. ("Maybe Pig was doing some strange dance," Lesh speculates.) "
