Falstaff is an Austrian wine and gourmet magazine. It is the oldest and highest circulation wine magazine in Austria and is published in German-speaking countries.

history

It was founded in 1980 by business journalists Hans Dibold and Helmut Romé with financial support from entrepreneur Leo Wallner .

Since 2010, the magazine has been 90 percent owned by Wolfgang M. Rosam and 10 percent by his wife Angelika. In 2017, ex-VW board member Christian Klingler acquired 23 percent of Falstaff Verlag , the remaining 77 percent remained in the possession of the Rosam family.

The magazine reports on wine, food, culinary travel and lifestyle. According to the 2017/2018 median analysis, it reached 861,000 readers in the wider readership and 208,000 regular readers. According to the analysis, it has a brand awareness of 65 percent in the general population and 88 percent among wine lovers. For the 30th anniversary of the paper, the Falstaff was subjected to a comprehensive relaunch at the beginning of 2010 and redesigned by the magazine designer Markus Rindermann. At the same time, the publisher launched an interactive online portal that also contains a database with over 86,000 tasting notes for wines. This portal was originally designed by online editor-in-chief Bernhard Degen and underwent a major relaunch in 2016. The website, for which Georg Grawatsch and Bernhard Degen are responsible, now reaches around 750,000 people in German-speaking countries every month.

In addition to the pleasure magazine, a restaurant guide, two wine guides, a café guide, a wine tavern guide and a bar and spirits guide are published annually by Falstaff Verlag . The Falstaff Wine Guide with over 3700 Austrian and South Tyrolean wines offers not only a German version, but also an English and Russian version. The wineries listed in the Falstaff Wine Guide have been rated with up to five stars since 2007. The wines themselves are classified in the guide according to the 100-point system - which is also used by the American wine critic Robert Parker . The annual Falstaff red wine guide lists the respective overall results of the Falstaff red wine award. The Falstaff Red Wine Award was launched in 1980 and is considered the most important national red wine award. The publishing offer is supplemented by the line extensions Falstaff Living , Falstaff Recipes , Falstaff Gourmet in the Snow , Falstaff Opera Ball and Corporate Publishing with the Austrian federal states.

Germany

In the spring of 2010, the company founded a subsidiary in Germany based in Düsseldorf, in which Falstaff Verlags-GmbH from Vienna holds a 75 percent stake, and in September 2010 it launched the first independent German edition of the paper. In addition to the gourmet magazine, which appears eight times a year, Falstaff Germany publishes the Falstaff Gasthausguide and the Falstaff Wine Guide Germany every year. The German website offers the latest news and information from the world of culinary lifestyle every day, as well as a pleasure database with around 88,000 wines and 10,000 restaurants.

Switzerland

In November 2014 the first Falstaff Switzerland edition was published with an initial print run of 40,000 copies. As in Austria and Germany, eight issues have been published every year since 2015.
