The Mehdorn Family Foundation for the Promotion of Neurosurgical Research and Intercultural Communication , FMS for short , is a non-profit foundation based in Kiel , which was set up in 2005 by Maximilian and Margarete Mehdorn.

Benefactor

From 1991 until his retirement in March 2015, Maximilian Mehdorn was Director of the Clinic for Neurosurgery at UKSH , Campus Kiel, and Professor of Neurosurgery at Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel.
Margarete Mehdorn is a freelance translator and conference interpreter. On a voluntary basis, she is increasingly involved in the area of ​​Franco-German relations, for example as deputy chairwoman of the Association of German-French Societies for Europe . V. Between 1994 and 2006 she was also President of the DFG Schleswig-Holstein Headquarters Kiel e. V.

Since the founders saw the promotion of young researchers in the field of neurosurgical research threatened by the increasing financial shortage in the public sector, they wanted to counteract this by establishing the foundation. The cross-cultural communication , such as for private communication initiatives, as well as school and university exchange programs were targeted promotion goals.

Foundation purpose

According to § 2 of the statutes, the purpose of the foundation is “to promote science and research in the field of neurosurgery including its neighboring areas, as well as to promote research, education, upbringing and cooperation in the field of intercultural communication between Germany and France and to raise funds for this purpose tax-privileged purposes ".

The foundation should primarily benefit young people from Schleswig-Holstein. In the field of neurosurgical research, all fields of neuroscience are to be promoted. Intercultural communication focuses on understanding and meeting between Germans and French, preferably young people from the partner regions of Schleswig-Holstein and Pays de la Loire .

Award winners

For the first time in 2007, the FMS awarded sponsorship prizes in the categories specified in the foundation's purpose. Since then, doctors, cultural researchers, psychologists, students, schoolchildren, trainees and other groups have received financial support. So far, a total of between € 15,000 and € 25,000 in prize money has been awarded each year. The funding amount depends on the financial needs of the project and the quality of the application. The number of award winners is variable. Several experts decide on the award of the sponsorship prizes in both departments.

Neurosurgical research

In the field of neurosurgical research, university research projects in the fields of neuropsychology , meningioma and glioblastoma research have been funded in the past . The winners came from both the UKSH Kiel and the university hospitals in Jena , Munich and Freiburg .

Intercultural communication

In the area of ​​intercultural communication, the prize winners range from artistic and cultural initiatives through school and university projects to town twinning . The funded projects included, for example, Franco-German poetry slams , photography exhibitions, rugby tournaments, exchanges between vocational students, etc. The award winners include institutions such as the Buddenbrookhaus Lübeck, but also civil initiatives such as the Kosel community partnership committee .
