Familyradio is a Christian radio network based in Oakland , California , USA . It was founded in 1959. The station only became known worldwide in the 1970s through the international broadcasts (including a German-language one) via WYFR in Okeechobee , Florida , and through end-time predictions from Harold Camping . Familyradio is mainly financed by donations from its listeners and has never been tied to a denomination .

history

In 1958, Familyradio founders Harold Camping, Lloyd Lindquist and Richard H. Palmquist of the Reformed Church came together to buy a VHF radio station in San Francisco and broadcast Christian programs there. Camping sold his construction business and with the proceeds he bought Kear-FM in San Francisco. After months of preparation, Familyradio went on air for the first time on Wednesday, February 4, 1959. In the 1960s, the mission company and non-profit organization Family Radio acquired six more FM and seven AM stations. Most of the programs were pre-produced in Oakland, taped , and broadcast to local stations. Popular programs included "The Quiet Hour" with John Arthur, "The Morning Clock" with Omar Andeel, "Live Music By Ken Boone" and "Night Watch" with Jerry Edinger. In 1972, Familyradio rented airtime for Christian broadcasts overseas from WNYW and in 1973 Familyradio took over this station completely. The callsign was changed to WYFR ( We're Your Family Radio ) and the transmitter was rebuilt in Okeechobee, Florida. The theme tune was the first eight bars of O God, be your honor , played by a wind quintet . From 1977 there were also broadcasts to Europe, including a German one, and broadcasts via satellite were also added from the late 1980s . For Europe there were also broadcasts from relay stations in Russia and Moldova ( Transnistria ).

From the 1990s onwards, this mission moved more and more away from church teaching and spread campings special teaching about the church age and various end-time predictions , e.g. For example, the rapture on May 21, 2011 and Judgment Day on October 21, 2011. Employees who subsequently left this radio mission were no longer replaced. When these events did not happen either, Camping withdrew more and more. Familyradio never really recovered from the high costs of the end-of-time campaign and gradually sold its transmission systems, including the WYFR station in Florida in 2013. The satellite broadcasts continued until 2014, when that was the end of it. What remains is a website with a live stream (English) and various programs as well as broadcasts on KEAR AM 610 in San Francisco. There are also some programs in Asian and Spanish via WRMI Florida.

The German program

Since the 1980s there has also been a German broadcast on Familyradio. This consisted to a large extent of Bible readings by Wolfgang Neumann from the " German Audiobible " (an audio Bible produced by Family Radio based on the Luther Bible), and the programs "Something for the Family of Today", "God and Science" with Hans Kaluza, “The Bible Study” with Harry Schmidt and the “Listener Mailbox” on Saturdays. This program was moderated by Julie Hesse, accompanied by religious music. At times, programs from other German-speaking mission organizations could also be heard. The special apprenticeships of Harold Camping, which were translated into German, gradually moved into the German program of Familyradio. The German voice of Camping was Arndt Peltner .

A small part of these programs, but the complete audio Bible for listening, were still available on the German website of Familyradio until 2019.
