WYFR (also known as Familyradio ) was a shortwave radio station in Okeechobee , Florida , USA . The station was owned by Family Stations, Inc. , as part of the Family Radio Network, and broadcast traditional Christian radio programs to international audiences. There were also German-language programs under the name Familie Radio, the voice of new life . The pause sign of WYFR were the first eight bars of O God, you be honor , which a wind quintet played.
WYFR stopped all shortwave transmissions on July 1, 2013 . In November of the same year the transmission systems were sold to another shortwave broadcaster. The commercial provider Radio Miami International , WRMI, is now broadcasting via this system.
history
The shortwave station WYFR goes back to the test transmitter W1XAL founded in 1927 by Walter S. Lemon in Boston . At that time, educational programs with a mixture of music and entertainment were broadcast. In 1939 the callsign was changed to WRUL (World Radio University for Listener) and the station moved to Scituate , Massachusetts . Initially, the program continued to exist as an educational radio. During the Second World War , the station was used by the US government for propaganda under the name Voice of America . After the war ended, the studios moved to New York and WRUL could be heard under the name "Radio Boston" or "The Voice of Freedom". The station got the call sign 1966 WNYW in 1966 and could be heard as "World Radio New York". In February 1972, Familyradio bought airtime from this station for Christian broadcasts overseas, and in 1973 it was fully acquired by Family Stations, Inc. The callsign was changed to WYFR (We're Your Family Radio); broadcasts began on October 20, 1973. From 1977 to 1979, WYFR was gradually set up as a new broadcast station in Okeechobee, Florida. From 1977 there were also programs for South America and Europe, including a German program. There were intermittent airtime contracts with Radio Taiwan .
In mid-2013, Family Radio announced it would close WYFR on June 30, 2013, but the station was bought by WRMI ( Radio Miami International ) and brought back on air in December 2013. WRMI can still be heard today.
