The Far de l'Illa de l'Aire ( Spanish Faro de Isla del Aire ) is a lighthouse on the island of Illa de l'Aire . This is located two kilometers from Punta Prima on the southeast tip of the Balearic island of Menorca and belongs to the municipality of Sant Lluís . Until 1977 the lighthouse, completed in 1860, was the tallest in the Balearic Islands. It is registered under the international number E-0366 and the national number 36.370. With the exception of the sector from 111 ° to 197 °, which is covered by Menorca, it irradiates the entire circumference up to a distance of 18 nautical miles .
History and structure
The lighthouse is a brick, black and white banded round tower with a one-story keeper's house, which is no longer inhabited today. Inside the tower there is a spiral staircase with 165 steps. The tower has a gray lantern and a double gallery . Until the construction of the Far del Moscater lighthouse on Ibiza in 1978, it was the tallest lighthouse in the Balearic Islands at 38 meters.
The Far de l'Illa de l'Aire was built from 1857 to 1860 according to plans by Emili Pou and equipped with second-order optics from the Sautter company in Paris . The construction claimed one life when a boat sank on April 13, 1859, which was supposed to bring workers to the Illa de l'Aire. On August 5, 1860, the lighthouse was opened.
In 1911, the oil lamp was replaced by a kerosene lamp Company Chance Brothers & Co. replaced. In 1957 and 1965 the tower was rebuilt, received a new optical system and a double gallery. Since then, its identifier has been a white flash every five seconds. After installing an automatic gas lamp in 1974, the lighthouse keeper was no longer needed. In 1976 he left the island. The lighthouse has been operated with electricity from a photovoltaic system since 1995 .
