Farah ( Pashto / Dari :فراه), Greek also Phyra (in antiquity) is a city in Afghanistan .
It is the capital of the Farah province of the same name . Farah is commonly identified with the ancient city of Phra or Phrada , which was destroyed by the Mongols in 1221 . After that, the city was rebuilt, but was again devastated by the Persians under Nadir Shah in 1737 . The population of the city is 42,800 (2020), most of the inhabitants are Pashtuns (90%). The oasis city is traversed by the Farāh Rud river of the same name . In the city of Farah there is a district called Yazdi. This part of the city is inhabited by Persian-speaking Shiites who come from Iran.
In August 2021, the city was captured by the Taliban .
