Fat Possum Records is an independent American record company based in Oxford , Mississippi .

history

The company was founded in 1992 by Matthew Johnson and Peter Redvers-Lee in Oxford, Mississippi. The company originally specialized in discovering blues musicians from the northern Mississippi region. Many of the early musicians were using the music critic of the New York Times , Robert Palmer , discovered who also produced several albums for the label.

Although many of the company's albums received critical acclaim, the company soon slipped into the red, a problem the company had to contend with for a long time. A legal dispute with Capricorn Records also tied up a lot of funds, so that some projects could not be realized. Over time, the company broadened its base by including young bands, also outside the blues genre, in their program.
