Fatimah Hashim

Do Fatimah Hashim (born December 25, 1924 in Kampung Parit Kurma , Muar , Johor , † January 9, 2010 in Kuala Lumpur ) was a Malaysian politician .

biography

After attending school at the Sekolah Melayu Perempuan Mersing in Johor , she worked as a teacher .

She began her political career in 1947 when she joined the United Malays National Organization (UMNO). In September 1956 she became chairwoman of the UMNO Barely Ibu Movement, the party's women's movement known today as Wanita UMNO. She held this office until June 1972.

On May 20, 1969, she was appointed Minister of Welfare to the government of Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman and held this office under his successor, Abdul Razak, until March 1, 1973. She was the first female minister in Malaysia. Her husband, Abdul Karim Abdul Kadir , a former attorney general , was Justice Minister and Minister for National Development at the time, making them the first couple in a Malaysian government.

On August 19, 2009, she was honored as one of four outstanding Malaysians with the Merdeka Award for Education and Community.
