The rottenwood beetles (Corylophidae) are a family of beetles .
features
The beetles are only 0.8 to 2 millimeters long. They are either oval, round or slightly box-shaped and have a light to dark brown body. The head is hidden under the pronotum and cannot be seen from above. The antennae are slightly thickened in the shape of a club at the end and can be folded into the recesses provided on the pronotum. Due to its size, species identification is difficult and only possible with a microscope.
Way of life
The beetles live on rotting wood and plants, under the bark and excrement of herbivores.
Systematics
The rottenwood beetle family is represented in Europe with 37 species from three subfamilies. In Central Europe there are 20 species from seven genera.
