Faust auf Faust (Schimanski) ( sic! ) Is a rock song that was written in 1985 by the German musician Klaus Lage together with Diether Dehm (alias N. Heirell) and played by the Klaus Lage Band. He was the theme song for the Schimanski -Kinofilm tooth for a tooth , which appeared in the same year and developed in Germany to a top ten hit.

Music and lyrics

It's a fast rock song that is played on electric guitars and synthesizer keyboards. The text is about the character Schimanski, who is described as tough, but also as vulnerable to women: "Fist on fist - hard, very hard / You can digest everything / But admit, tender, very tender / Has hers Hand yourself knocked down / And that's tough for Shimei / Your very private crime novel ”. In the film, Schimanski falls in love with the beautiful journalist Ulli ( Renan Demirkan ). In the rest of the text, some motifs from the Ruhr area are played with: "Like you, she wants to know too much / Not a trace is too hot for her either / Behind a coal pot / Does coal wash some vest white."

Emergence

Lage and Diether Dehm wrote the song for the Tatort film Tooth for a Teeth with Götz George as Commissioner Horst Schimanski , which was released on October 10, 1985. It was produced by Lage together with Wolf Maahn . Klaus Lage remembered playing the song to George for the first time:

“The moment I was afraid of, I never forgot when I played him a rough mix of fist to fist on the Walkman the day after the photo session for the single cover, at half past six at Berlin-Tegel Airport , which he still had until then hadn't heard, and then he said: 'Strong, I like it!' "

- Klaus Lage

Lage said that there was "always a respectful and sympathetic wavelength" between the two.

Publication and reception

The single was released in October 1985 to coincide with the film's release. It reached number ten in the German charts and was placed for 20 weeks. On the B-side is the song Taxi . The single cover shows Klaus Lage and Götz George laughing arm in arm together. With the title Fists of Steel , Lage also recorded an English version. Spiegel Online wrote: “In Faust on Faust the whole flair of the Ruhrpott romanticism comes into its own, Lages poetry and George's moods merged into one unit. Tooth for tooth and fist on fist belong together like - well - the fist on the eye. ".

On November 30, 1985 the Klaus Lage Band played the song in Peter's Pop Show on ZDF . She appeared with the song twice in the ZDF hit parade ; the band was voted first by TED on November 13, 1985 and was therefore allowed to play the song again in the following issue on December 18. The group Faust played on Faust in Die Superhitparade - Hits des Jahres '85 on January 30, 1986 .
