Faustino Reyes

Faustino Reyes López (born April 4, 1975 in Marchena ) is a former Spanish featherweight boxer and silver medalist at the 1992 Summer Olympics . He belongs to the Roma minority .

The 1.75 m tall featherweight (up to 57 kg) carried the battle name El Niño and began boxing at the age of 13. He was Spanish Junior Champion in 1988, Spanish Junior Champion in 1990 and 1991, and Spanish Champion in 1991 and 1995.

He celebrated his greatest successes in 1992. He reached 5th place at the Junior European Championships in Scotland, won the European Olympic qualification tournament in Greece and the pre-Olympic test tournament "Pre-Olympic Tournament" in Badalona . He defeated, among others, his compatriot Manuel Calvo, the Canadian Michael Strange and the Australian Jamie Nicholson. He then started at the age of 17 at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona , where he faced Briton Brian Carr (22:10), Thai Somluck Kamsing (24:15), Cuban Eddy Suárez (17: 7) and Ramaz Paliani from the United Team (14: 9) was able to prevail and reached the final. There he was defeated by the German Andreas Tews (9:16), thus winning the silver medal and at the same time becoming the youngest Spanish medalist at the Olympic Games.

He was then a participant in the World Championships in 1995 and 1997, as well as the European Championships in 1996, but did not get past the round of 16 in all three events. At the 1995 World Cup he was defeated by Oktay Urkal .
