Scapania umbrosa is a liverwort - kind of order Lophoziales . German names are Schatten-Spatenmoos or Spitzlappiges Spatenmoos .

features

Scapania umbrosa forms yellow-green to reddish-brown lawns. The plants are up to 2 centimeters long, the tips of the stem are bent back. As with all Scapania species, the leaves are bilobed. The smaller upper lobe is directed obliquely forward and does not reach over the trunk. The lower lobe protruding from the trunk is about twice as large. Both lobes are pointed-ovate and mostly toothed towards the leaf tips. The lamina cells are about 25 to 28 micrometers in the middle of the leaf and have triangular to nodular, thickened cell corners. There are 3 to 6 elliptical oil bodies of 5 micrometers in each cell.

The moss is diocesan . Perianthia are not uncommon. The perianth mouth is entire. Brood bodies are formed at the ends of the stems , they are two-celled, elliptical and red-brown.

Locations and distribution

Scapania umbrosa grows in humid locations in moderately fresh, slightly shady to shady areas, preferably on rotten wood, less often on lime-free rocks and on lime-free soil. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, moss is mainly found in mountainous areas up to the tree line; in the hilly and lowlands it occurs only sporadically or is completely absent. In Europe it occurs from northern Europe south to the Pyrenees, to northern Italy and Romania. There are other occurrences in North America.
