Fazıl Say - Alla Turca is a German music film by Gösta Courkamp from 2005, which portrays the Turkish pianist and composer Fazıl Say . The for ARTE resulting program documentation appeared later on a Arthaus Musik - DVD .

content

The documentation collages interviews with Say, conducted in German, with landscape shots and musical content into a portrait. This shows on the one hand the worldwide reputation of the musician, and also cites international press Says, such as the French newspaper Le Figaro , who wrote about him: “He is not only a brilliant pianist, he will undoubtedly become one of the great artists of the 21st century be". It is also shown how Say on the other hand contributes to the popularization of Western European composers such as Bach and Beethoven in his Turkish homeland. Excerpts from Say's oeuvre will be shown, ranging from the internationally acclaimed interpretation of classical compositions, Turkish classical music and folklore, jazz, own classical and jazz compositions to a session with the pop singer Sertab Erener and making music for friends. After recordings in Istanbul are dedicated to Says' composition Black Earth , the climax of the film is the performance of his oratorio for Nazim Hikmet in Anatolia . Finally, the artist's strong political commitment becomes clear.

Reviews

Klassik.com saw in their DVD review the musical side of Says in the film a little bit less of an effect, but attested all in all "a successful and haunting portrait of the artist and person Fazil Say". The new day spoke of "73 precious DVD minutes (...) with Fazil Say". Olaf Dittmann wrote in 2009 in Pianist : "The result is a strong portrait of this exceptional pianist, who often looks so sleepy and who is refreshingly lacking the dignity of some Western stars". Manuel Brug also described the film in Die Welt as "absolutely worth seeing".
