The Federazione Giovanile Communista Italiana (FGCI) was the youth association of the Partito Comunista Italiano .
history
The FGCI was founded in 1921 as a youth association of the communists after the decision to split the Communist Party of Italy from the Socialist Party of Italy . After the Second World War , it was decided in 1949 to re-establish the FGCI. The constituent congress of the FGCI, the youth organization of the Communist Party of Italy, took place in Livorno from March 29 to April 2, 1950 . Enrico Berlinguer , then 28 years old , was elected the first national general secretary of the youth organization at this congress. He held this office until 1956. On December 19, 1990, on the occasion of the 25th and last congress of the FGCI, the dissolution of the association was decided with 356 votes out of 491 voters (72.5%). Two months later, the Italian Communist Party was dissolved, which became the Democratici di Sinistra .
membership
Young people from the age of fourteen could join the FGCI. Until the age of twenty-one, the member enrolled in the FGCI and the Partito Comunista Italiano generally took part in the political life of the youth association. The work of the two organizations was based on the principle of respect for mutual autonomy, even if politically the same goals were pursued.
Start-up
In 2016, a Communist Party of Italy was founded again, which took over the historical name of the Partito Comunista Italiano and at the same time also founded a new youth association with the name Federazione Giovanile Comunista Italiana.
