Federico Mayor Zaragoza (born January 27, 1934 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish biologist and politician, he was Director General of UNESCO from November 15, 1987 to 1999. He is currently the head of the Spanish Foundation Cultura de paz .

Life

Scientific career

Mayor graduated in Biochemistry at the Complutense University of Madrid from. He taught at the Universities of Granada and Madrid, he was rector of the University of Granada (1968–1972) and co-founder of a molecular biology center. Mayor is an internationally renowned biochemist and molecular biologist, particularly because of his work on the cerebral metabolism of newborns .

Political activity

Mayor was State Secretary in Spain (1970–1976), Minister of Education and Science (1981–1982), Member of the Spanish (1977) and European Parliaments (1987). He was a member of the Unión de Centro Democrático . Between 1978 and 1984 Mayor was first deputy, later advisor to the UNESCO director general, from November 15, 1987 to 1999, director general. The assumption of office by Mayor fell in one of the most difficult phases of UNESCO, his term of office was significantly shaped by the end of bipolarity and the political and intellectual upheavals that went with it. Nevertheless he succeeded z. B. the establishment of the World Heritage Center (WHC) under the direction of the German Bernd von Droste zu Hülshoff , who later became his deputy.

Social and scientific commitment

Mayor was a member of the Club of Rome , was or is a member of numerous scientific societies, he is an honorary member of the Club of Budapest and a member of the honorary protection committee of the International Coordination for the Decade , which advocates a culture of peace and nonviolence for the children of the world. In the Seville Declaration on Violence question (1986) it is one of the first signatories.

Mayor is currently the head of the Spanish foundation Cultura de paz ("Peace Culture"). In many publications he has dealt with social issues relating to science and research .

From 1995 to 2000 he was a member of the jury of the International Nuremberg Human Rights Prize .
