history

The museum goes back to an initiative of the Heimatverein Overledingerland eV , founded in 1948 , which, in addition to maintaining the local culture, local customs and the Low German language, is dedicated to the establishment and operation of the Fehn- und Schifffahrtsmuseum. The museum has been housed in Villa Graepel since 1950 and was officially recognized in 1954. Since the municipality moved out, the Overledingerland local history association has been using the entire building as a museum. In 2017 it recorded around 5,000 visitors. In addition to the permanent exhibition, special exhibitions also take place.

The museum building

The museum is housed in an Art Nouveau villa from the Wilhelmine era with a large Gulf barn as the rear building. The impressive building was erected in 1902 by Conrad Phillip Graepel, owner of the CAI Hagius Sohn department store. In 1936 the building became the property of the Westrhauderfehn community. Up until the construction of a new town hall in 1978, the town council was housed in the villa. The municipality is the owner of the historic house to this day.
